Diagnostic Ultrasound
What is Diagnostic Ultrasound?
Diagnostic ultrasound is a safe, non-invasive imaging technique that uses high-frequency sound waves to assess musculoskeletal structures in real time. At Genine Manchip Physiotherapy, diagnostic ultrasound can be used to assess muscles, tendons, ligaments, bursae and other superficial soft tissues. It allows us to visualise tissue structure and movement, as well as identify changes such as swelling, inflammation, fluid collections and tissue tears.
Importantly, ultrasound can be used during your physiotherapy assessment and throughout your rehabilitation, allowing us to monitor tissue healing and changes over time. This can help us make more informed clinical decisions and tailor your treatment and rehabilitation programme to your individual needs.
Genine Manchip has completed specialised training in musculoskeletal diagnostic ultrasound and is trained to assess a range of musculoskeletal structures. If an ultrasound assessment identifies anything concerning, unexpected or requiring further investigation, you will be referred to an appropriate musculoskeletal sonographer or medical specialist for a comprehensive diagnostic scan and formal report.
The Benefits of Diagnostic Ultrasound
Real-time imaging: Assess tissues while they are moving and during specific movements or loading.
Monitor healing: Track changes in tissue healing throughout your rehabilitation.
Supports clinical decision-making: Helps correlate your symptoms and physical examination findings with what is happening within the tissues.
Non-invasive: Ultrasound is performed externally and does not require needles or injections.
No radiation: Ultrasound uses sound waves rather than ionising radiation.
Cost-effective: Can provide useful information about soft-tissue injuries without the cost or time associated with some other imaging modalities.
What Conditions Can Musculoskeletal Diagnostic Ultrasound Identify?
Shoulder: Rotator cuff injuries and tears, bursitis, biceps tendon injuries, tendinopathy
Elbow: Tennis elbow, Golfer's elbow
Wrist & Hand: Carpal tunnel syndrome, superficial ganglions
Hip: Gluteal tendinopathy, Hip flexor muscle and tendon injuries, bursitis, joint effusion
Knee: Patellar and Quadriceps tendinopathy, Hamstring injuries, Baker's cysts, MCL and LCL injuries, ITB-related conditions, Patellar dislocation-related injuries
Foot & Ankle: ligament injuries, Peroneal tendinopathy, Posterior Tibial tendinopathy, Achilles Tendinopathy, Plantar fasciopathy, calf muscle strains and tears
